Silversea Cruises' newest ship, Silver Nova, arrived in Alaska for the first time to embark on a series of seven-day voyages from May 9 until Sept. 5.

This also marks the introduction of the S.A.L.T. program to the region, connecting travelers to the local culinary culture through immersive experiences onboard and ashore.

Silver Nova’s inaugural Alaska season comprises 18 voyages, including the June 20 Vancouver, BC to Seward cruise with an experience at Ketchikan's historic salmon cannery and a lumberjack show, and the July 25 Seward to Vancouver trip, with a Champagne toast at a waterfall overlooking Hubbard Glacier.

S.A.L.T. Kitchen and Lab

New S.A.L.T. enrichments for Alaska include local dishes served in the S.A.L.T. Kitchen such as cured duck breast with traditional Alaskan frybread and tangy redcurrant jam, Alaskan salmon pie and venison ravioli with wild muschroom duxelles.

The S.A.L.T. Lab class, 'Wild Salmon: An Alaskan Way of Life,' will explore three simple and varied dishes, including salmon cakes, smoked salmon spread and pickled salmon by Emma Teal Laukitis and Claire Neaton, who grew up on a homestead in Alaska’s remote Aleutian Islands.

S.A.L.T. Chef's Table

In the evenings, S.A.L.T. Lab transforms to the S.A.L.T. Chef’s Table, featuring local ingredients and creatively reimagined staple dishes. Highlights of the Alaska menu include salmon smoked at the table with pilot bread and salmon roe, dungeness crab salad, birch-syrup braised duck with morel mushrooms, Alaskan-beer battered porcini mushrooms with samphire mayo, salt-roasted beets with pickled local berries and spruce-tip salt, reindeer tartlet and dark chocolate beetroot cake with sea buckthorn curd.

Community support

As part of Royal Caribbean Group, Silversea is expanding its support of the port communities in Alaska through the 'Sea the Future' commitment with initiatives including a partnership with the Tongass Historical Museum for the opening of the Ketchikan Salmon Walk this summer, enabling cruisers to delve into the salmon migration and life cycle in Ketchikan Creek. The nearly two-mile walk is equipped with upgraded lighting and pavement, and placards enlivened by renowned artists Ray Troll, Nathan Jackson and Marvin Oliver.

As well, local sourcing initiatives include partnerships with Skagway Spirits, Seafood Producers Cooperative and Alaska Specialty Seafood, sourcing fresh seafood and other local items.

And a renewed commitment to Sitka Sound Science Center’s Scientists in the Schools program enables local scientists to partner with students in K-12 classrooms to explore science and ecosystems. This program benefited 960 students from nine schools last year with the support of Royal Caribbean Group.
